Float festival
This magnificent festival is celebrated in Madurai
on the night of the full moon. The ornamented icons
of the goddess Meenakshi and her consort are taken out
in a colourful procession from the Meenakshi Temple
to the Huge Mariamman Teppakulam. The icons are floated
in the tank on a raft decked with flowers and flickering
lamps.
The annual float festival of the Sri Parthasarathy
Swamy temple in Triplicane, Chennai, began on 10th March
2005. The festival will be on for seven days. The proceedings
began in a grand manner as a large number of devotees
gathered in front of the temple.
The first three days of the festival are dedicated for
Sri Parthasarathy Swamy, and one day each for Sri Narasimhar,
Ramar, Ranganathar and Varadharajar.
During this festival, the presiding deity will be taken
on the decorated float in the temple tank, Kairaveni
Pushkarani. The float will complete three rounds in
the tank. Many devotees gathered on the steps of the
tank on all four sides to witness the festival from
close quarters.
